Application requirements and eligibility criteria

For International Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Senior Care Workers

 

Nurses and Nursing associates trained in an EU, EEA or EFTA country:

  • Who have not applied for registration with NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council UK) by 31st December 2020 have to go through the application process under the category  Nurses trained outside the EU.The fee that has to be paid may be different to Nurses trained outside EU, EEA or EFTA Countries.
  • All Nurses and Nursing Associates will need apply to NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council UK) for Eligibility and Qualification – evaluation process.
  • Nurses in general care ( Adult nurse or General Adult Nurse in the UK) and Midwives who have qualification that meet the EU requirements for automatic recognition will NOT need to take a Test of Competence. Nurses with any other Qualifications from EU, EEA or EFTA Countries will need to take the Test of Competence. Nursing Associates will need to take Test of Competence for Nursing Associates.
  • Nurses trained in EU,EEA or EFTA countries will need to provide evidence of English language proficiency evidence.
  • IELTS UKVI score of minimum 7 with not less than 6.5 in each component or an overall B in OET.
  • Recent considerations for IELTS are a requirement of at least 7 for reading, listening, speaking and at least 6.5 for writing. If combining two IELTS tests taken not more than 12 months apart, scores in either of the two test sittings must be at least 6.5 for listening, reading, and speaking, and at least 6 for writing.
  • An OET test result of at least grade B (350 or above) for reading, listening, and speaking, and at least grade C+ (300 or above) for writing. If combining two OET tests taken not more than 12 months apart, scores in either of the two test sittings must be at least grade C+ (300-340) for listening, reading, and speaking, and at least grade C (250-290) for writing.
  • Nurses trained in EU, EA or EFTA countries may have the option to take  an EU aptitude test if they do not meet the requirements for practising in UK due to any short falls.

Health Care Assistants/ Auxillary Nurses/ Senior Care Workers:

  • Have a Qualification in Health and Social Care in home country (Senior Care Worker Applicants will need a Nursing degree from their home country).
  • Minimum one calendar year experience in healthcare or nursing care (for Senior Care workers). 
  • IELTS UKVI academic score of 5.5 – this may vary according to employer with some employers asking for a score of 6.

Nursing Associates:

In England  NMC sets the standards for Nursing associates  who help bridge the gap between health and care assistants and registered nurses. Nursing associates will be able to work with people in a variety of settings within health and social care, with people of all ages in various nursing branches.Unlike Nurses, they may not have the provision of acquiring additional skills and knowledge in a specific speciality of nursing.

  • A Nursing qualification which is equivalent to a foundation level degree in England – It is a level below a full undergraduate degree which is done after secondary school education (example: 3 year Diploma in Nursing)
  • Apply for Eligibility and Qualification evaluation with Nursing & Midwifery Council UK ( NMC).
  • IELTS UKVI score of minimum 7 with not less than 6.5 in each component or an overall B in OET.

  • Pass CBT test for Nursing Associates and be eligible for OSCE for Nursing Associates.

Nurses:

  • A Nursing Degree in home country.
  • A minimum of two calendar years of experience as a Nurse/Senior Carer.
  • Apply for Eligibility and Qualification evaluation with Nursing & Midwifery Council UK( NMC).
  • IELTS UKVI score of minimum 7 with not less than 6.5 in each component or an overall B in OET.

  • Pass the NMC Computer Based Test for Nurses and be eligible for OSCE.
